It was my first attempt to create a caboshon. I didn't invented the technique,
but I combined several technique that I found (at least I like to think so), so I
describe it here, that if you like it you don't need to look any further.
The technique I used makes it possible to create a caboshon from any form stone
(or every other base that you want ot use to create a caboshon.)
To make the caboshon necklace I used an agate flat stone who is an about
1/4 of inch thick and four type of beads: tree types of sead beads number
10 (clear, dark brown and transparent light brown), and clear bugle beads.
The length of a necklace is 26 inch. It is divisible by about 2.5 inch a caboshon and
the rest is a necklace itself). Because of structure of the necklase it is very easy
to vary it length.
Phase 1: Creating a caboshon
1 row: To begin measure around of the stone, than string a beads ( my pattern is
2 light brown beads 1 clear bead ) so the length of the string will be slightly
smaller than your stone circumference. Tie the tread ends together using two square knots.
2 row: Pull the needle trough three beads from the first row (two light brown and one clear).
Add three beads on needle (clear, dark brown, clear) and pull needle trough next clear
bead from the first row. Continue till the end of the first row. To end the second row
add last 3 beads from the second row (placing them above 2 first light brown from the
first row) pull needle trough first clear bead from the first row and clear and dark
brown from the second row.
3 row:
Add five beads on needle (dark brown, clear, light brown, clear, dark brown) and pull needle trough dark
brown bead from the second row. Continue till the end of the second row. To end the third
row add last 5 beads from the third row (placing them above 3 first beads from second row)
pull needle trough first dark brown bead from the second row and dark
brown, clear and light brown from the third row.
4 row:
Add three beads on needle (clear, dark brown, clear) and pull needle trough next light
brown from the third row. Continue till the end of the third row. To end the forth row
add last 3 beads from the forth row pull needle trough first light brown bead from
the forth row and clear and dark brown from the 5-th row.
Now it is time to put stone inside the net that we just created, because the next row
will be the last.
5 row:
Add one bead on needle (light brown) and pull needle trough next dark
brown from the 4-th row. Continue till the end of the 4-th row. Try to bead real
tight. Now just tie a knot at the end of your work, and fasten the ends of your thread.
If your stone it thick, your may consider an idea to make add one or two more rows, but
I think that 5 rows is enough in most of the cases.
Phase 2: Creating a necklace
To make a necklace I used 3 types of beads (light and dark brown and clear bungle).
Now it a time for a really important decision. Where your going to connect your caboshon
to a necklace. So choose two point.
Pull a tread through a bead in caboshon (first connection point) and move it so the bead
will be at the middle of the thread. Now using two needle technique we are going to make a
necklace. Add one light brown, one clear bungle and another one light brown on every end of the
tread. Pick one dark brown and pull both needle trough it. Continue till desirable length.
If you want to have a clasp, don't forget that your need to devide the necklace length to a half
and stop after your reach the half of the length. Than you need to repeat this process, beginning
from the second connection point.
If you not adding a clasp, after your reached a right length, just pull both of your needle trough
the second connection point and fasten the tread.
A is a connection point.
Phase 3: Creating a twig
For the twig I used light and dark brown and clear seed beads.
I believe that easiest way to explain how to create a twig is a pictures, but
I add a little bit of explanation.
To make a stem just add a beads to a thread in order (see a picture), in some places
you'll need to go through a bead several times (just folow the order). At the ends of the
little twigs (bead numbers: 6, 9, 11, 17, 19, 24, 26, 31, 33) add a flowers (folow the
second pucture).
In the matter of facts it'll be easy and fun, as soon as you get hang of it.
